The Foreign Minister of Spain Josep Borrell said on Wednesday his country was against the declaration of Kosovo's independence and that Pristina and Barcelona cases were different and that Madrid supported a search for a compromise in the European Union-mediated dialogue Belgrade - Pristina, the Beta news agency reported.

Spain is among five EU member states that have refused to recognise the independence of former Serbia's province.

In a meeting with Vu?i? in Belgrade, Borrell denied any comparison between Kosovo and Spain's Catalonia province which had been seeking the secession from the country for a while.

"Those comparisons are not founded. They do not weight although Catalonia's independence supporters like them," Borrell told reporters after meeting his Serbia's counterpart Ivica Da?i?.

Catalonia is a wealthy, semi-autonomous region in north-east Spain. Its population is around 7.5 million, and they have their language, parliament, flag and anthem, as well as the regional police force and control over some of the public services.

Serbia's President Aleksandar Vu?i? thanked Spain for supporting his country's territorial integrity and asked Borrell to pass on the invitation to King Felipe VI of Spain to visit Serbia.
